Understanding live hedging

The art of securing a pre-match bet while it's being played

🛡️What is live hedging?

Live hedging (in-play coverage) means betting on the opposite outcome of your pre-match bet while the match is in progress, to secure a gain or reduce a loss.

It works because odds move live according to what happens on the field. A goal, a red card, an injury — and the odds change instantly.

If you bet pre-match and the scenario is favorable early in the match, you can lock in a profit before it even ends.

💡A concrete example

Scenario: PSG vs Marseille. You bet 2 days ago.

Your pre-live bet

→ 100€ on PSG Win at odds 2.50

→ Potential payout: 250€ (profit +150€)

At the 70th minute, PSG leads 2-0. Live odds have evolved:

Live odds

→ PSG Win: 1.10 (almost certain)

→ Marseille or Draw: 8.00

You decide to cover with 30€ on Marseille or Draw at 8.00. Result:

→ If PSG wins: 250€ - 100€ - 30€ = +120€

→ If reversal: 240€ - 100€ - 30€ = +110€

You lock in a profit of ~+115€ whatever happens next!

🎛️The 2 coverage modes

⚖️ Balanced (recommended)

Live stake calculated so the gain is identical whatever the final outcome. Maximum safety, average profit.

Ideal when you just want to lock in a gain without taking additional risk.

🎯 Guaranteed profit

Minimum live stake so the worst case is breakeven (0€). Higher profit if your pre-live bet wins, zero if the coverage wins.

Ideal when you still believe in your pre-live bet but want to remove the risk of loss.

🎬When to use live hedging?

⚽ Football — team leading early

You bet on PSG, they lead 2-0 at the 30th. PSG Win's live odds dropped → you can cover with Marseille or Draw to lock in.

🎾 Tennis — set taken early

You bet Djokovic, he wins the 1st set 6-2. Djokovic Win's live odds dropped → cover with Nadal in 3 sets.

🏀 Basketball — widened gap

Favorite team +20 at half-time when it was given +5. Cover to secure.

🚨 Unexpected change

Red card, key player injury, missed penalty → the odds explode. Take advantage to enter/exit.

💡 Long-term bets

Bets on league/tournament winner: over the months, you can cover several times to lock a final profit.

📖Terms to know

Hedging (coverage)

Cash out

Built-in bookmaker function offering to 'withdraw' your winnings live. Often less advantageous than a calculated manual hedge.

Pre-live (pre-match)

Bets placed BEFORE the start of the event.

Live (in-play)

Bets placed DURING the event, with odds evolving in real time.

Lock

Securing a profit by covering your bet, whatever happens next in the match.

Pro tips

📌 Calculated hedging is more profitable than bookmakers' built-in cash out

📌 Act fast when the odds move — they can come back in a few seconds

📌 The higher the live odds, the less you need to stake to cover

📌 A good exchange (Betfair, Matchbook) offers better odds than a classic book

📌 Only use hedging if you have a significant timing advantage (match already well oriented)

📌 Beware of streaming delays — the odds you see may be stale

📌 Some bookmakers limit live bets on accounts suspected of hedging
