Understanding odds formats

Decimal, fractional, American: all explained

🔢Why several formats?

Bookmakers display odds differently by country. Decimal (2.00) dominates in Europe, fractional (1/1) in the UK, and American (+100) in the US. They all express the same thing: the ratio between stake and winnings.

Implied probability translates the odds into a percentage chance estimated by the bookmaker (margin included). It's the most useful info to judge whether odds have value.

🧮Conversion formulas

Implied prob = 100 / decimal odds

Decimal to American: if odds ≥ 2, it's (odds−1)×100 positive. If < 2, it's −100/(odds−1). Fractional is just (odds−1) expressed as a fraction.

Practical tips

📌 Remember that 2.00 = +100 = 1/1 = 50%: the tipping point.

📌 Higher decimal odds = lower estimated chance = bigger potential win.

📌 Always compare implied probability to your own estimate: that's the basis of value.
