Understanding ROI

The true measure of your performance, beyond profit alone

📈What is ROI?

ROI (Return On Investment) is the return on your bets expressed as a percentage of what you staked.

ROI = (Profit ÷ Total stake) × 100

Example: you staked 4300€ in total and won 520€ net. Your ROI = 520/4300 × 100 = 12.09%.

ROI is far more telling than gross profit: winning 1000€ by staking 100,000€ (ROI 1%) has nothing to do with winning 1000€ by staking 10,000€ (ROI 10%).

🎯Why it's THE metric that matters

Many bettors brag about their winnings without mentioning their stakes. ROI sets the record straight:

🎯 Comparable between bettors

A big bettor making 15% ROI on 50,000€ staked is less efficient than a small bettor making 30% on 5,000€.

📊 Evaluate a strategy

Your monthly ROI tells you if your method works, regardless of your bankroll size.

💎 Forecast your gains

With a stable ROI, you can project your gains: "if I stake 1000€/month at 5% ROI, I make 50€/month".

📏What is a GOOD ROI?

Many amateurs think you should aim for 50%+. In reality, professional sports betting runs around 2-8%:

🏆 ROI ≥ 10%

Pro/elite level. Rare and remarkable, often on modest volumes or over a short period.

✅ ROI 5-10%

Very good level. Typical of a serious bettor following a disciplined method (value betting, selective tipsters).

👍 ROI 2-5%

Profitable. You beat the bookmakers but modestly. That's already an excellent result in the long run.

⚠️ ROI 0-2%

Breakeven. A single bad streak can put you in the red. To watch.

❌ ROI < 0%

Losing. The majority of amateur bettors. The strategy needs revising.

Note: bookmakers typically have a 3-7% margin (RTP 93-97%). A positive ROI means you beat that margin.

📅Over how many bets is it reliable?

ROI is an average: the more bets you have, the more reliable it is. An ROI calculated over 10 bets doesn't mean much.

❌ < 100 bets

Too unreliable, far too much variance. Draw no conclusions.

⚠️ 100-500 bets

First visible trend but still a lot of randomness.

✅ 500-1000 bets

Reliable ROI. You can evaluate your strategy.

🏆 1000+ bets

Very reliable ROI. Represents your true skill level.

Pro tips

📌 A stable 3-5% ROI over 1000+ bets = you're an excellent bettor

📌 Beware of ROIs > 30% on a small sample: high probability of regression

📌 Calculate your ROI by bet type (1X2, Over/Under, BTTS...) to identify your strengths

📌 ROI mechanically drops with accumulators (margin multiplied)

📌 A pro bettor aims for 5-8% ROI in the long run, no more

📌 Yield (= ROI) is the true measure of skill, not absolute profit

📌 Track your ROI month by month to detect trends (hot/cold sport)
